Chiefly family correspondence re life in Edgefield District, S.C., the Civil War, and other topics, including printed broadside, [13 Feb. 1857], for program adopted by Edgefield Town Council "Arrangements for the Reception of the Remains of Hon. Preston S. Brooks." Civil War materials include incomplete letter, 9 Jan. 1862, from [Cicero Adams], Camp Hampton, re his recovery from a cold and discussing dissension caused by the sudden departure of Moragne's Regiment and Abney's "utter surprise at the maneuvering which sacrificed him, after all his efforts to form the Regt." Letter, 8 June 1865, Edgefield District, S.C., from Paul H[amilton] Hayne, to Miss [Lizzie] Hughes, with a poem that was "suggested by your beauty, your frailness, & a ... charm which ... has touched me deeply"; labor contract, 8 July 1865, Edgefield, between J[ohn] H. Hughes and twenty-five African American freedmen identified by name; and volume, 1861-1973, photocopied scrapbook containing newspaper clippings and miscellaneous letters and papers re the Nicholson, Hughes, and Bones families.
